Chief Engineer

Position Summary

The Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising the implementation of all property and equipment preventive maintenance and repairs, monitoring life safety systems and utilities, and managing the engineering department in compliance with corporate/brand standards and local, state, and national regulations. This role ensures the protection of assets, associates, and guests while maintaining all building systems, equipment, and grounds.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee preventive maintenance and repair of all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, IT, and life safety systems.

• Manage maintenance of building equipment including HVAC&R, kitchen, laundry, pool, landscaping, and physical plant.

• Ensure compliance with preventive maintenance procedures for guestrooms, public spaces, and property grounds.

• Administer departmental budget, accounting procedures, and inventory control of supplies and materials.

• Supervise, train, and evaluate engineering staff; assign tasks and follow up to ensure productivity.

• Maintain accurate records for R&M budgets, PM programs, capital projects, and inspections.

• Conduct daily property tours, identifying and resolving engineering, housekeeping, or departmental needs.

• Serve as property expert on life safety systems; train managers on related procedures.

• Support brand initiatives, guest satisfaction systems, and corrective action tracking.

• Stay current with technological advances to enhance hotel operations.

• Maintain engineering spaces in a safe, organized, and energy-efficient manner.

• Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• Vocational schooling, military training, certification, and/or trade experience in at least one area: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry.

• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in a comparable facility; hotel experience preferred.

• Strong working knowledge of hotel operations, including security, safety, business planning, maintenance, and budgeting.

• Skilled in multiple trades: HVAC, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, plumbing, roofing, landscaping.

• Basic understanding of accounting procedures and Microsoft Office proficiency.

• Effective leadership skills to motivate and develop staff, with ability to plan, organize, and delegate.

• Strong communication skills, adaptable to different audiences.

• Physical ability to perform frequent walking, climbing, bending, lifting (up to 100 lbs), and working in hot/cold or noisy environments.
